About the client

Teia is a company of biologists that collects animal data for their clients.They asked us to create a web application that would speed up their work. Their main problems were to create projects efficiently, import collected data and manage the planning of all the projects.

My role

I was the design lead on this project and worked closely with a product manager and a development team. We also let the client be very involved in our process. I collected data, came up with solutions to the problems, designed wireframes and made the final product.

Research

Client interviews

The project manager, tech lead and myself did a bunch of interviews to understand the current problems that the user was facing. We had to understand how they currently did their job in order to improve it.

Some key points

  • Currently a lot is being done manually in Excel
  • Easy to get lost in the amount of data
  • A lot of time consuming tasks such as creating and editing
  • A lot of time consuming tasks such as creating and editing planning for all researchers.

Data analysis

We also got a bunch of documents and protocols that we had to analyse to fully understand their work. These restrictions had to work well with the new product.

  • The data from the protocol had to match with the new product.
  • Data had to be combined

Information Architecture

Placement of content

After making a list of all the requirements I created lo-fi wireframes and placed the content on pages where I thought it was needed. I did a combination of site mapping and information architecture to figure out the correct structure.

Prototyping

By implementing the appropriate structure, I designed an interface that demonstrated the product's functionalities, and created several versions for the most crucial features. After testing these designs with Teia and the development team, I incorporated their feedback to correct any errors.

Final designs

A visual designer helped me with creating a styling for the final product. When this style was created I applied it to the latest wireframes and made the final design with a design system.

Project detailed

Users can open a project and see an overview of all the most important information. This helps the project manager to see the status of each project.

Adding research areas

One of the most important steps is to create research areas where you can assign what animal needs to be researched, what researchers will perform the data collection and where this needs to take place

Basic information

Projects are automatically important and only a few data points need to be filled. The steps are small so the process of creating a project does not feel long

Planning overview

Project managers can see a calendar with a clear overview of all the days that include data collection. By hovering over the day, they see where the research is taking place, how many research moments there are and the amount of researchers.

Project overview

Clicking on a day in the calendar opens an overview of the projects that contain more detailed information that is useful for the project manager.
