About the client

Vloto offers 100% electric, luxury and well maintained transportation. Rent electric cars such as Tesla’s and Audi e-tron for a sustainable world. Vloto also takes care of the insurance. The entire car is operable through the Vloto app.

My role

My task was to design the Vloto mobile application that is used to fully control the cars. I worked closely with development in order to see what was technically possible. The first delivery was an MVP (minimum viable product). I took care of the users flows, UX research and created a minimalistic visual branding.

Research

Client interview

We had an interview with the client and asked them about the purpose of the app and who is going to use it. The purpose of this interview was to get a good look into the future of Vloto and how we could help them in the most efficient way.

Some key points

  • Users can only use Tesla’s and no other vehicles.
  • They will kick-off the app with a small community and will then improve it along the way.
  • Users are able to order and pick up a Tesla
  • First the client will deliver the Tesla’s, in the future there will be pickup locations

Competitor analysis

With a competitor analysis, we had a good look at how current car-sharing apps operate. If we could create recognisable components then we had a certain validation for our design choices.

Some key points

  • Most apps have simple UI
  • Often use a map to show locations of cars
  • Long account creation process

Flowchart

I created an extensive flowchart to understand all the possible outcomes and what would happen in edge cases. By mapping this out, I was able to understand what pages had to be designed.

Some key points

  • ID identification can cause trouble in account creation
  • App will have multiple stages (not rented yet, rented, currently renting)
  • Set a good focus on security when operating a car

Main goal

Create a mobile app where users can rent and operate electric vehicles

Other goal

Let users be able to get a vehicle delivered

Other goal

Let users be able to find pickup locations

Other goal

Let users be able to pick out different vehicles

The users

Mid size fashion brands

Vloto is launching its application with a small group of users and will expand when the app grows. The app will be shared in a small community of people that bought a house in a certain area in The Netherlands. They are allowed to use this service as a bonus on the purchase of their house.

Some goals

  • Most of them have never used a Tesla
  • They are familiar with other car rental apps
  • Are not familiar with controlling a car with an application

Prototyping

Wireframes

I made a bunch of screens and did multiple user tests. One test mainly focussed on the account creation screen and the others on the usability of the product itself. After every test I implemented feedback points until the product was validated.
